About Us
History
In 1993, the San Diego County Department of Mental Health Services (DMHS) identified housing as a major problem of homeless people with mental illness.
The Department of Mental Health issued a Request for Proposal to fund an agency to develop housing opportunities for people with mental illness. DMHS selected A Community of Friends (ACOF), an accomplished developer and owner of permanent supportive housing in the Los Angeles area, to set up an independent nonprofit in San Diego County to develop permanent housing for mentally ill adults.
In 1994, ACOF helped establish TACHS by obtaining nonprofit status and putting together the first board of directors. TACHS and ACOF worked together to initiate two permanent, supportive housing developments in San Diego.
In 2001, TACHS became fully independent of ACOF, and has successfully obtained various funding resources for the agency.
